FEATHE at The Underground of UW-Stout 02/25/2010

The generous members of Feathe who donated their song "Roses" to Gallery 111 for the collaborative fundraising CD "East of the River" are set to perform at the Underground at UW-Stout on Thurs Feb. 25th, 2010 at 8pm with Caroline Smith and the Goodnight Sleeps. The show is Sponsored by Blue Devil Productions.

Below is the Press Release:

Blue Devil Productions is proud to present Caroline Smith & the Good Night Sleeps with Feathe. The artists are scheduled to perform at 8pm on Thursday, February 25th, 2010 in The Underground located on the lower level of the Memorial Student Center at the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Indie folk artist Caroline Smith and her ‘Good Night Sleeps’ are dancing around the Minneapolis music scene with bliss. Smiths sophisticated, crispy voice is accompanied by various acoustic instruments and splashed with harmonies creates tunes that make you want to tap your foot and clap your hands. Her traditional lyricism plays true to old time, love, folk ballads. She is the girl that brought her guitar on a camping trip and blew everyone’s mind away when she began to sing around the campfire. If Jenny Lewis (of Rilo Kiely) had a quirky younger cousin her name would be Caroline Smith.

H-A-R-M-O-N-Y is obviously part of the spelling in FEATHE. This local, all female ensemble of three sure knows how to harmonize! Their voices blended together form a creamy mixture of wonderful and delightful folk pop. The accordion used in most of their songs creates a strong ocean wave and sailing on top of that wave is a light guitar ship with beautiful vocal sails. Feathe is one of many bands that are helping the local Chippewa Valley music scene find a spot on the map.

This event is sponsored by Blue Devil Productions of the University of Wisconsin-Stout and is FREE to all. Please call (715) 232-2432 or go to bdp.uwstout.edu for more information.

Ben Teegarden recorded VALLEY session at Gallery 111

The Valley 9.2 from The Valley on Vimeo.

From the Valley:

Collaborations between visual art and music seem to be on the rise in our area, with new events popping up every day. Students at UW-Stout have created a venue for this with Gallery 111, a new art space in Menomonie, Wis. Ben Teegarden, who I’ve known from the open mic circuit in Green Bay, has been active in the creation of the gallery, providing tracks for a benefit album and playing at the opening. It made sense, then, to film where he would be comfortable.

The space at Gallery 111 is artistic itself with a large picture window, a beaten wood floor and vast white walls. Ben played three tracks, each adding some instrumentation as we moved to bigger rooms. Artists and collaborators gathered in the main room, awaiting entertainment that would take the stage in the evening and pounding in the final nails needed for preparations.

Artists join forces in gallery in Menomonie

By: Pamela Powers

MENOMONIE - While volunteering at River Heights School, UW-Stout art major Hannah Schroeder admired the beauty in the children's artwork.

Then she saw a storefront at 111 Main St. E. and realized the space could be a gallery, a place where anyone could display and sell their creative works.

She started talking with college friends, her father and a professor and realized she could help start a cooperative gallery.

Schroeder, seven other UW-Stout students and two community members are board members of Gallery 111, which is named after the store's address.

"It's an art gallery we co-own," Schroeder, 21, said. "We can all show our art in it."

The gallery will have its grand opening Jan. 11. Art from everybody who volunteered to paint the gallery and founding members will be shown. Regular gallery business hours have not yet been determined.

As owners, when they sell their art, they keep 100 percent of the profits.

Others can join the cooperative as sustainable artists. For level one, which costs $5 a month, artists keep 60 percent of the profits of personal sales. At level 2, for $8 a month, artists keep 70 percent. Level 3 sustainable artists pay $20 a month and keep 90 percent.

Other artists can negotiate a fee, and the co-op will keep 50 percent of the profits of personal sales, Schroeder said.

The money kept by the cooperative goes to cover costs of keeping the gallery open, Schroeder said. This includes lights, heat, insurance and maintenance.

"Every month the art is going to be fresh," said Schroeder, of Roseville, Minn. "We open our doors to art of any medium."

The gallery will feature plays, poetry readings, independent films, sculptures, paintings, mixed media and fashion shows.

Two or three times a year, the co-op will host a salon show. Artists can hang their art on the wall, filling the gallery, and then the co-op board will pick whose work they wish to feature.

Schroeder said the galleries at UW-Stout don't feature many opportunities for students to show their work.

Gallery 111 also gives community artists a space for their work, said Anthone Hendrickson, 24, a UW-Stout art studio major and a board member.

"Community members, even if they are not so-called artists, may not know how to approach a gallery for an exhibition," Hendrickson said.

Fundraising is being done to help with costs. Earlier this month a dance was held at Acoustic Cafe to pay to replace the floor.

The group is selling recordings from local musicians called "East of the River" for $5 plus shipping and handling to raise money.

Operating a gallery is one of Schroeder's career goals.

"I want to curate shows for a living," she said. "I want to own a gallery or cafe or another venue."

New art gallery opening in Menomonie

Menomonie (Press Release) - University of Wisconsin-Stout student Hannah Schroeder has recruited fellow art students and local artists to join her in launching Menomonie's newest art gallery.

The cooperative art gallery, Gallery 111, has its grand opening from 7-10 p.m., tonight, Jan. 11, at 111 East Main Street.

According to the gallery founders, the grand opening date was selected because of the relationship between the gallery's name, its address and the numerals of today's date (1/11/10).

The cooperative gallery will display and sell a variety of works from student and community artists.

New Art Co-Op in Menomonie

A whole heck of a lot of artists around the Chippewa Valley spend time talking about arts co-ops. Unfortunately, I think, the majority of that talk ends up as wasted breath over a pitcher of Berghoff at the Joynt or whatever the Menomonie/Chippewa Falls counterpart might be. There are a handful of art co-op type organizations in existence right now (like Arts Coming Together, Tangled Up in Hue), and there have been honest-to-god attempts in the past (Destini Artworks, anyone?), but truly strong and active art co-ops seem to be at a premium around these parts. However, some artists in Menomonie hope to change that.

Eight UW-Stout art students and two townies are starting a new co-op art gallery in downtown Menomonie – looking to have local people display and sell their creative works. Gallery 111, named for the store’s address (111 Main Street E.), is slated to open January 11, but has been displaying items from Stout students since December 18. Art from the founding members – as well as those who helped with the renovation – will be shown at the opening. Soon, others can join the co-op, so if you’re interested in getting involved or following the progress of the gallery, check out its website:Gallery111Menomonie.com. And check out the blog.

"Menomonie goes East" By: Tyler Griggs

To help offset the costs of renovating and opening Menomonie's new art co-op Gallery 111, co-owner Hannah Schroeder met with local musicians to contribute songs for a CD which they could sell. The CD, East of the River, features songs donated by all-girl folk trio Feathe, former The New Science member Savannah Smith and the acoustic/electronica The New Audrey and more. See the full list here.

The CD is available for $5 and can be purchased at Gallery 111 (111 Main Street E., Menomonie) when it opens Jan. 11 or by e-mail request at gallery111.menomonie@gmail.com.

Look forward to a full article on Gallery 111 in Volume One's Jan. 28 issue.
